The Information Technology Industry Council (ITIC) has confirmed its membership in the newly formed U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium. The Consortium is a pioneering collective dedicated to fostering the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in a secure and responsible manner.

According to a press release by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the consortium aims to unite over 200 organizations. These entities will work collaboratively to establish guidelines for monitoring and developing AI. These science-based guidelines are expected to lay the groundwork for AI safety as the technology continues its rapid expansion. The consortium's role is crucial in helping the U.S. adapt to this rapidly evolving industry and address the capabilities of new-generation AI-backed models and systems.

NIST's press release further explains that the consortium will establish a knowledge and data sharing platform for AI stakeholders, identify mechanisms to streamline input from federal agencies on relevant topics, and prioritize research and evaluation requirements and approaches. This strategy is aimed at gaining a better understanding of the impacts AI will have on society and the U.S. economy. The formation of the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium was announced by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo on February 8.

"ITI is pleased to join the U.S. AI Safety Institute’s Consortium. We are supportive of this public-private partnership to drive the research, development, and innovation necessary to advance the standards that support safe and trustworthy AI," said ITI President and CEO Jason Oxman. "The Consortium’s work will be critical to furthering AI innovation in the United States and globally. We look forward to collaborating with NIST on this important effort." Oxman emphasized that advanced research, evaluation, and standards on AI safety are being conducted by the institute with an aim to create a trustworthy foundation for future AI development.
